Founded in 1875 by Maharaja Mohinder Singh of Patiala, this historic institution stands as the oldest seat of contemporary higher learning in Northern India, carrying forward a legacy of academic distinction, princely patronage, and architectural grandeur into the present day.
Established in 1875, Government Mohindra College is a living monument of princely heritage and academic tradition, its foundation stone laid by the Viceroy of India and its magnificent building formally opened by Viceroy Lord Ripon in 1884. Originally affiliated to the University of Calcutta, the college later became one of the first colleges affiliated to the University of Punjab, Lahore, before coming under Punjab University, Chandigarh after Partition, and finally under Punjabi University, Patiala, in 1962. Spread across a sprawling 22-acre campus in the heart of Patiala, the college today serves a student body of more than 7,200, making it one of the largest and oldest government colleges in the region.
Affiliated with Punjabi University, Patiala, and holding an 'A' grade NAAC accreditation, the college was also recognised as the first institution in Punjab to receive the Council's highest grade, and continues to be honoured by the UGC as a "College with Potential for Excellence."
