Founded in memory of Maharaja Rajinder Singh of Patiala, Government Rajindra College traces its roots to a primary school established in 1904 and has grown into the oldest and most prominent institution of higher learning in the Malwa region of Punjab.
Originally established as a primary school in 1904, the institution was upgraded to an Intermediate College on 31st December 1940 and named in memory of Maharaja Rajinder Singh of Patiala. Undergraduate courses in the humanities began in 1950, followed by science studies in 1955, BSc classes in 1962, and the commerce stream in 1968, steadily building the college into one of the oldest and most respected institutions in the Malwa region — a legacy documented in Encyclopaedia Britannica, Vol. III.
