About Periyar University

Periyar University was established in 1997 under the Periyar University Act, 1997 (Tamil Nadu Act 47 of 1997). It is located in Salem, at the foothills of the Shevaroy Hills, on a sprawling campus at Periyar Palkalai Nagar. The university is named in honour of the legendary social reformer and rationalist, Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, whose revolutionary ideals of self-respect, equality, and social justice continue to inspire the institution's vision and mission.

The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and doctoral programmes across its 26 academic departments. Disciplines include Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Computer Applications, Education, Physical Education, and interdisciplinary fields.
