The Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) was established on 19th June 2012 under the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Act, 2012. It is located in Nagapattinam, on the Vettar River View Campus. The university was renamed in honour of the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa, in 2018. It is the first dedicated fisheries university in Tamil Nadu and one of the premier fisheries universities in India.
The university operates through a network of 10 constituent colleges, 3 paraprofessional institutes, 8 Centres of Sustainable Aquaculture (CeSA), and 1 affiliated college, with a presence in 12 districts of Tamil Nadu. It offers 5 professional undergraduate degree programmes, 3 paraprofessional undergraduate programmes, 18 M.F.Sc. disciplines, 14 Ph.D. disciplines, and various postgraduate diplomas. The university is accredited by ICAR with an 'A' grade for Fisheries Science and by AICTE for its engineering programmes.
TNJFU is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with 12B status and has been ranked 25th among State Agricultural Universities in India by ICAR. It has also received NAAC 'A+' accreditation.
