The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University (TNMGRMU) was established on 24th September 1987 under the Tamil Nadu Medical University Act, 1987. The university began functioning in July 1988. In 1991, it was renamed in honour of the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the late Dr. M.G. Ramachandran. Located in Guindy, Chennai, it is the only medical university in Tamil Nadu empowered to grant affiliation to new government and self-financing institutions across Medical, Dental, Indian Medicine, Homoeopathy, and Allied Health Sciences.
As an affiliating university, TNMGRMU oversees hundreds of affiliated colleges and institutions across the state. It offers a comprehensive range of programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels. These include MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BNYS, BSMS, BUMS, MD, MS, MDS, DM, MCh, and various PG Diplomas in medical specialties.
